This is an aspect of the master year that can be divided in 2 big branches: Conceptualization & Context, and Coaching & Creation.
Conceptualization & Context
is a series of lectures and workshops, covering the field of new media. One of those series of lectures was the newly created puntKom, a series of lectures organized by the master students. Since I only have been able to attend 1 lecture, I can’t give a credible opinion about the content of those lectures, but what I’ve seen looks promising enough.
We also participated in a workshop called “Design in Residence”, hosted by artist Ief Spincemaille and provincial domain Dommelhof Neerpelt. Central theme in this
workshop was the use of head-mounted displays.
As far as I’m concerned, this workshop was a failure, not in the least by the period it was hosted. Right before the last sprint towards the thesis deadline, but this is a fact that the lecturers already know. About the content of the workshop, I can be brief, it was a waste of time. The project we made was quite okay, but nobody really seemed to care about it. We were glad when we were finally allowed to go home. The only good thing I remember was spending a few days with my fellow students, but I preferred to spend those days abroad with them. The school trip to Amsterdam was canceled due to a lack of interest (Amsterdam, c’mon, really
???). I, and many others, couldn’t be bothered to go to Amsterdam, Holland just isn’t abroad for Belgians (and certainly not for Dutch students).

Coaching and Creation
Another part of those lectures and workshops were the Media Lab and Research Lab.
Media lab was a course organized for the master students to have them explore new technologies, like Arduino and Pure Data. I have had some interesting lectures in this course, but the before mentioned technologies weren’t really appealing to me. The multi touch table project we worked on on the other hand was very interesting. A shame the table got short-circuited
.
The other branch were the Research Labs. These research labs were workshops intended for the master students to support them in writing their thesis content. I have been to basically all of them, and they proved to be a great help in writing my abstract, mentioning my sources and document my research.
